Job Purpose or Objective(s): Assist the Government-Legal Staff Attorneys and Legal Assistants in providing research and legal advice to the assigned departments of the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma.
Internships are only open to Choctaw Nation tribal members currently enrolled in college.
Our Summer Intern Program is an 8-week temporary, paid program that runs from June 3, 2024 to July 27, 2024.
This position pays $15 per hour.
Housing is available.
Primary Tasks:
Research tribal, state, and federal laws to help advise Choctaw Nation departments with legal issues.
Write legal memos analyzing legal issues for the staff attorneys.
Assist the staff attorneys with negotiating contractual agreements and providing legal advice in order to mitigate legal liability.
Assist staff attorneys to provide legal representation to the Nation in all requested and/or required legal and liability areas.
Assist in the case management of in-house matters.
Perform administrative duties for the staff attorneys.
Prepare for and attend legal meetings under the supervision of the staff attorneys.
Draft tribal laws, codes, and legislation.
Review and draft internal policies and procedures.
Attend Choctaw cultural and language events.
Perform other duties as may be assigned.
Required Education, Skills and Experience:
MINIMUM
Active law student.
Choctaw CDIB or Choctaw member status.
Must be currently attending an accredited college, university, or postsecondary educational institution.
Must have completed the first year of law school.
Must be available to work 40 hour per week eight consecutive weeks during the summer.
Cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA) of 2.
5; 3.
0 GPA or greater preferred.
Ability to communicate effectively, both oral and written on a technical level.
Ability to handle multiple tasks, work independently or in a group and manage priorities.
Ability to work effectively in a team environment.
